Carolina Panthers Keeping Manhertz

The Hertz is returning to Carolina. Chris Manhertz, that is.

On January 29, 2019, Manhertz inked a new deal with the Carolina Panthers before he hit free agency. The announcement was topped off with a video of him scoring a touchdown with a ball thrown to him by running back Christian McCaffrey.

Manhertz was released from the New Orleans Saints in 2016 and was picked up the next day by the Panthers. Once he arrived, he did not play every snap, but he did catch the coaches’ attention with his ability to block on offense and on special teams.

It is starting to look like the Panthers are trying to get younger players into their starting roles to give Cam Newton a lot of options to throw to or defend him when he runs.

Manhertz was signed by the Buffalo Bills in 2015, at a time when he did not have any football experience outside of football video games; he had played four years of college basketball and then decided once he had graduated to switch to football.

With Greg Olsen getting up there in age, this move shows the Panthers’ confidence in Manhertz as a solid back up.
