Can Paris Saint-Germain Fight the Immense Pressure?

Paris Saint-Germain is set to take on Atalanta in the quarterfinals of the 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League. PSG is among the final eight for the first time since the 2015-2016 tournament. Les Parisiens are looking to advance to the final four for the first time since the 1994-1995 tournament.

Atalanta is competing in its first Champions League tournament. They’re determined to make a huge impact in their debut; so far, they’ve been successful. Atalanta would love nothing more than to eliminate PSG as it would make them a potential strong favorite to hoist the title.

After losing the first leg against Borussia Dortmund, PSG fell under tremendous pressure. However, PSG would win the second leg in a comfortable fashion. It would seem that they certainly can handle pressure at the moment. But now that they’re deeper in the tournament, the pressure only intensifies.

Can PSG handle the pressure now that is has increased significantly? That remains to be seen.

In PSG’s case, they are known for crumbling under intense pressure. In the previous two tournaments, PSG’s elimination was due to succumbing to pressure with their poor mentality and lack of effective team chemistry.

As far as talent goes, PSG has plenty of it. Neymar, Mauro Icardi, and Kylian Mbappé give PSG a huge advantage on the attacking side. Those three are all perfectly capable of scoring goals. It’ll be up to them to make it happen. In addition, they’ll need to be on the same page and play together as a unit.

Overall, PSG is loaded with talent. However, PSG needs a winning mentality in order to get it done and advance to the semifinals. In order to obtain the necessary mentality, they’re going to need to be fully prepared and focused come gameday.

Les Parisiens are more than capable of fighting the pressure. However, it’ll be up to them to not allow the pressure to overwhelm and beat them. In other words, PSG is in control of its own destiny. They know they cannot take Atalanta lightly. Taking opponents lightly has been a crucial mistake committed in the past and the club knows they cannot make that same mistake again.
