Cam Newton was injured in his preseason debut Thursday night when he sustained an injury to his foot or ankle depending on the different reports coming out Friday morning.

Based on the video of the play in which the injury occurred and the examine of Newton on the sideline it appears that they are checking his midfoot and LisFranc Ligament areas of the foot. On Friday morning the results of the x-ray were revealed to be negative and Newton underwent an MRI which revealed a midfoot sprain
A midfoot sprain results from the overstretch of the ligaments in the midfoot which hold the bones of the midfoot (cuniform and proximal metatarsals) together. A stage one which is basically an overly stretched ligament which returns to normal after a short period of RICE – Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation requires two to four weeks for complete recovery. A stage two or three sprain is the result of a partial or complete tear of one or more of these ligaments and could require as much as three months for recovery and in some cases, where the affected bones are unstable in their alignment, surgery to use screws to affix the ligaments to the bones while they heal.
The normal recovery time for a Grade One midfoot sprain is two to four weeks. A portion of this time is spent non-weight-bearing and then slowly beginning to bear weight on the foot. The recovery time is based on the time to resolve swelling and pain in the midfoot and being able to participate in normal activities without discomfort. There is a chance that Newton will be able to play in week one but it will depend on how he recovers from this latest injury.
