Buffalo Bills vs. Tennessee Titans: Recap and Highlights

The Buffalo Bills faced the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Oct. 6 in Week 5 of the 2019 NFL season. Here is a recap and highlight reel from the game.

The Bills came into Nashville after losing at home to the Patriots in Week 4 while the Titans came off an impressive win on the road against the Falcons. Buffalo’s quarterback, Josh Allen, cleared the concussion protocol after getting knocked out of last week’s game. Tennessee had a return of their own as left tackle Taylor Lewan’s came back from suspension.

All morning leading up to game time, the rain was falling, and the precipitation continued through the game, giving it the feel of a classic defensive battle.

The Titans got the ball to start the game. Lewan would make his presence known on the team’s first play, though not the way he would’ve liked, getting called for holding.

Both teams exchanged punts for most of the first quarter. Early in the second, after the Bills turned the ball over on downs, Titans’ kicker Cairo Santos attempted a 50-yard field goal but it was no good, gifting the Bills great field position. The Titans’ defense held the Bills. The teams exchanged punts again.

The Bills took over at their 40-yard line with just over five minutes left in the half. Josh Allen drove his team downfield. The drive culminated with an eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Lee Smith.

The Titans got the ball back. A solid drive stalled at the Buffalo 18-yard line. Santos came on to attempt a 36-yard field goal. Again, he missed.

After exchanging three-and-outs to start the second half, Josh Allen was picked off by Titans safety Kevin Byard. Seven plays later, Derrick Henry scored from a yard out.

The Titans’ defense forced a punt on the next drive. Derrick Henry scored from eight yards out, but that was called back for a holding penalty. Three plays later, Marcus Mariota found A.J. Brown for a touchdown, but that was called back because Mariota was over the line of scrimmage. On came Santos to attempt a 33-yard field goal. This time, it was blocked.

The Bills drove 77 yards in six plays. Allen found Duke Williams in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Titans’ offense again put together a quality drive, but it stalled, setting up a fourth down on the Buffalo 35 with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Rather than go for it or punt and pin the Bills back, Mike Vrabel sent Santos on again, this time to attempt a 53-yarder, which he missed.

After exchanging three and outs, the Bills turned to Frank Gore to run the last four minutes off the clock.

The Titans’ offensive line struggles returned as they gave up five sacks.

The win puts the Bills at 4-1 with the bye in Week 6. The loss drops the Titans to 2-3 with a Week 6 matchup against the Broncos in Denver.
