Brian Shaw Set to Coach the NBA G League Elite Pro Team

Garrett Brooks | June 3rd, 2020

Former Denver Nuggets head coach Brian Shaw is set to lead the NBA’s new G League elite team that will feature NBA prospects.

The Journey

The primary focus of the team is player development, so hiring a coach with experience is no surprise. Prior to taking the Nuggets job, Shaw spent years as an assistant under Phil Jackson. After his short Nuggets tenure, he joined Luke Walton‘s staff in L.A. as associate head coach.

The three seasons spent working with the (former) Lakers young players likely helped his candidacy.

It’s important to note that his time in Denver didn’t end very well. Rumors came out that he was struggling to connect to his players in the time leading up to his departure. Additionally, many criticized his lack of flexibility to maximize his players’ strengths. His roster never fit his preferred style of play in Denver, but he was set on his preferences.

What to Expect

An extremely respected member of the NBA community, Shaw has grown in the years since his head coaching job. After all, the NBA wouldn’t put someone they couldn’t trust to connect with players in charge of this team, would they?

No, absolutely not.

Shaw learned from one of the greatest and has worked alongside countless other incredible basketball minds. Coaching this ‘elite pro team’ is an incredibly important role for the league.

Look for Brian Shaw to become an asset for prospects who choose the G-League path over the NCAA.
