Breaking: Montrezl Harrell Agrees to Deal with the Lakers

The defending champion Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a deal with big man Montrezl Harrell, according to reports.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports the two-year deal is for the mid-level exception. Harrell, who won the Sixth Man of the Year award last season, will have a player option for the second year of the deal. The Lakers also added Sixth Man of the Year runner up Dennis Schroder in a trade following the NBA Draft Wednesday night.

Harrell joins the Lakers following a three-year stint with the Los Angeles Clippers. He put up 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last season for the Clippers while coming off the bench.

An undersized center, Harrell excels in the pick and roll game on the offensive end. Although small for the position, Harrell makes up for that with his aggressive mentality and high motor. He shot 70.5% from within three feet of the basket last year, proving his height doesn’t prevent him from finishing at the rim.

The news came shortly after reports came out that Dwight Howard had agreed to a one-year, veteran’s minimum contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Last season, Howard was the Lakers backup center when the team was at full health. JaVale McGee, who was the starter when healthy, recently opted into the final year of his contract with the Lakers.

Los Angeles is tight on money to fill out the rest of their roster, but Vice President and general manager Rob Pelinka has shown creativity with the team in recent years. One thing is certain at this point, the Lakers are getting better in preparation for their title defense.
