Breaking: 49ers Acquire Offensive Lineman From Washington

Even though the Niners made it all the way to the Super Bowl in 2019, there were still some serious questions about the line protecting Jimmy Garoppolo.

Those questions were put to rest when the team acquired offensive tackle, Trent Williams, from the Washington Redskins in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick as well as a third-rounder in 2021.

Williams, 31, last played in a game on Dec. 30, 2018. However, since then he’s given the Redskins an ultimatum of “trade me or release me because I’m not playing.” That took an entire year to develop, but the veteran tackle finally got his wish.

The Niners, who are still looking for a decision from Joe Staley about his return, have some stability on one of the outside tackle positions.

Williams is a seven-time Pro-Bowler and likely provides a more immediate impact than anybody San Francisco could’ve selected––especially since they went in another direction with Javon Kinlaw (defensive lineman) and Brandon Aiyuk (wide receiver) with their first two picks.

The 31-year-old tackle reunites with Kyle Shanahan, who drafted Williams fourth overall back in 2010. It should be a great move for both parties, the only question left is will San Fransisco extend him?
