Boston Red Sox rehire Alex Cora

The Boston Red Sox have rehired Alex Cora to be their new manager. The team hasn’t confirmed the rehire, which was first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

The Red Sox had second interviews with Cora, Philadelphia Phillies player information coordinator Sam Fuld, Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Don Kelly, New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza, and Miami Marlins bench coach James Rowson, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Thursday night Cora and Fuld were the only two in the mix. It seemed that Cora was going to get the job since Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and general manager Brian O’Halloran visited Cora last week in Puerto Rico.

Cora was initially hired by the Red Sox in October 2017. In 2018 he led the Red Sox to a franchise-record 108 wins and a World Series title. It was their fourth World Series title in 15 seasons. Last year the Red Sox fell to 84-78.

In January Cora and the Red Sox parted ways due to Cora’s involvement in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. He was suspended for the 2020 season.

Hiring Cora is probably not the best move for the Red Sox. He is now a cheater and what happens if he cheats again? The New England Patriots are already known to be cheaters and Cora could give the Red Sox that label if he were to try to cheat again. Hiring Fuld would have been the better choice for the Red Sox because who knows if Cora will try to cheat again or cause some controversy.

Cora is popular among the players though and Red Sox fans are thrilled that he’s back. This year the Red Sox struggled, going 24-36. The question is can Cora turn things around in 2021?
