Blaze Jordan is as Good as Advertised

Blaze Jordan

In the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Blaze Jordan with the 89th overall pick. The Mississippi native was one of the top high school power bats and youngest players in his class. While he isn’t projected to be in the majors until 2024, he made headlines in the minors this past season. During his first taste of pro ball, Jordan hit .324 in 28 games. The DeSoto High School product had 34 hits between two levels, including 15 that went for extra bases. While his sample size was small, Jordan showed why the Red Sox hold him in high regard.

Although Boston’s ninth-best prospect had to wait to see live game action due to Covid-19, he did not disappoint. In his first 73 plate appearances in the FCL, he had a 1.018 Ops. That earned Jordan a promotion to Single-A, where he continued to thrive offensively. While his strikeout rate did rise, it stayed under 20 percent. For a player who had been in high school two years ago, he didn’t seem overwhelmed.

While Jordan impressed at the plate, he was just as good defensively. In 146.2 innings in the field, the 2020 draftee only committed two errors. He also turned two double plays and finished his first professional season with a .943 fielding percentage. The power-hitting infielder stood out in a minor league system full of talent.

What Makes Jordan Special?

Before Jordan was drafted, he was a known name. At age 11, Jordan won his first national home run derby, and he won the High School Home Run Derby at the 2019 All-Star Game. He can drive the ball to all fields due to his impressive bat speed and generates high exit velocities. That power has translated well to the minors so far and made him the Red Sox’s top third base prospect.

Entering next season, the former third-round pick will be looking to build on his impressive start. He will also get to play his first full minor league season, assuming the lockout doesn’t alter the schedule. Although there are few holes in Jordan’s game, he can improve on his plate discipline. Regardless of where he starts the season, his progress will be watched closely. Over the last few years, the Red Sox have focused on improving their farm system. While Jordan’s career is just getting started, it appears that Boston could have a star in the making that is just getting started.
