They say all good things have to come to an end. For Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts, that was the case Wednesday evening in Toronto.
On the fifth pitch of a 2-2 count, Betts swung and missed at an 84.4 mile per hour slider from Blue Jays starter Fransisco Liriano.
The K was the 24-year-old’s first since Sept. 12 of 2016, when then-Baltimore Orioles reliever Oliver Drake caught him looking on a 1-2 count.
During his run, Betts hit at a .353 clip and faced 57 different pitchers, according to Red Sox Notes (@soxnotes).
Betts’ streak had been the longest the MLB has witnessed since Juan Pierre went 147 plate appearances without going down on strikes with the Florida Marlins in 2004.
Denny Doyle held the Red Sox record, for which he set in 1975, when he went 159 plate apperances without witnessed a third strike.
