Best offseason signings at the break

Marcos Mendoza | July 12th, 2019

As we hit to the end of the first half we take a look at some of the best offseason signings.

DJ LeMahieu

The New York Yankees gave the former Colorado Rockies 2B a 2yr $24MM deal and its definitely been one of the best offseason signings. D.J. LeMahieu has a line of .336/.383/.518 .900 OPS .182 ISO .378 wOBA 138 wRC+ and a 3.3 fWAR. At the break already his season worth has been $26.6MM and was selected as an American League All-Star.

Michael Brantley

The Houston Astros gave the veteran OFer a 2yr $32MM deal to leave the Cleveland Indians. Brantley’s line is .324/.383/.511 .893 OPS .186 ISO .376 wOBA 141 wRC+ and 2.6 fWAR. Brantley has been worth $20.8 MM this season and was also selected as an American League All-Star.

Nelson Cruz

The Minnesota Twins were looking for offense help in the offseason and they definitely have gotten that from Cruz. The Twins gave the veteran DH a 1yr $14MM deal. Cruz has a line of .279/.367/.554 .921 OPS .275 ISO .381 wOBA 138 wRC+ and a 1.5 fWAR. He’s helped lead the Twins to have one of the best offenses in MLB. This season Cruz is already been worth $11.9 MM and should eclipse the $14 MM he was given by the end of the season.

Derek Dietrich

The former Miami Marlins 2B was released on November 20th and was looking for a new home. The Cincinnati Reds signed him on a minor league deal and had to fight to get on the MLB roster. Dietrich has been a great find for the Reds he has a line of .221/.349/.544 .893 OPS .323 ISO .369 wOBA 126 wRC+ and 1.8 fWAR. He’s been worth $14.3 MM this season, I’d say that’s insane given the fact he’s on a minor league deal.

Eduardo Escobar

Escobar re-signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a 3 yr 21 MM deal. After having a 3.5 fWAR last season and being worth $27.7 MM it was a steal to re-sign him at that price. Escobar has a line of .296/.353/.543 .896 OPS .247 ISO .369 wOBA 127 wRC+ and a 2.8 fWAR. Again it has a been an absolute steal at the price the Dbacks signed him at as he already been worth $22.6 MM this season.

James McCann

McCann was given a 1yr $2.5 MM deal to leave the Detroit Tigers and join the Chicago White Sox’s. The move has paid off for McCann as he’s having the best season of his career. McCann has a line of .316/.371/.502 .873 OPS 186 ISO .368 wOBA 133 wRC+ and 2.2 fWAR. He’s been worth $17.7 MM this season and was selected as an American League All-Star for the first time in his career.

Wade Miley

The Houston Astros are at it again getting another great deal done with a veteran. Miley was signed to a 1yr $4.5 MM deal. The veteran SP has a 3.28 ERA 7.6 H9 1.2 HR9 2.9 BB9 7.6 SO9 1.17 WHIP and 1.4 fWAR. His numbers aren’t jaw-dropping but he’s been a consistent force in the rotation. Miley has been worth $11.4 MM and already has the same WAR as last season and eclipsed his last season worth at $11.1 MM.

Mike Moustakas

After having a solid season last year with the Milwaukee Brewers they decided to re-sign him on a 1yr $10 MM deal. He’s been a great force for the Brewers as he has a line of .263/.334/.551 .885 OPS .365 wOBA 125 wRC+ and a 2.6 fWAR. Moustakas has been worth $20.4 MM this season and was selected as a National League All-Star.

Yasmani Grandal

Grandal passed on a longer deal with the New York Mets to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers on a 1yr 18.5 MM deal. The decision has paid off for Grandal and the Brewers. He has a line of .259/.372/.525 .897 OPS .266 ISO .373 wOBA 130 wRC+ and 3.3 WAR. He’s been worth at $26.1 MM this season which is great value for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Hyun-Jin Ryu

Ryu accepted the $17.9 MM qualifying offer to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He bet on himself to have a great season and he’s absolutely done that. He’s been one of the best pitchers in MLB this season. Ryu has 109 IP 1.73 ERA 0.90 WHIP 7.3 H9 0.8 BB9 8.2 SO9. With a 3.7 fWAR, Ryu has been worth $24.6 MM this season and he was selected to his first National League All-Star team.

Honorable Mentions: Adam Jones, Lance Lynn, Jose Iglesias, Jonathan Schoop, CC Sabathia
