Bengals Hire Lou Anarumo as Defensive Coordinator

The Cincinnati Bengals have finally found their guy. Lou Anarumo has been named their defensive coordinator, and he has a lot of work to do.

Anarumo spent last season with the New York Giants as their defensive backs coach. Before that, he was with the Miami Dolphins as defensive backs coach from 2012-2017. Anarumo was named interim defensive coordinator at the end of the 2015 season. That is his only coordinator experience in the NFL. There may be some familiarity between him and new head coach Zac Taylor as they were both on the Dolphins staff from 2012-2015.

Let’s hope the Bengals hired the right person for the job as they were reportedly turned down by multiple candidates, but Taylor now has the most important assistant on his staff. The Bengals were ranked as one of, if not the worst defenses in the league last season, so Anarumo has an uphill battle to improve a unit that was under siege.

As it has shifted so has the offense, and now it’s time to focus on a pass rush up the middle instead of the edge.
