New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski exhibited what can be called a “comeback” performance this past Sunday against the New York Jets which has lead to some curious comments from head coach Bill Belichick.
While Gronkowski has made a big living off of his nickname “Gronk,” Belichick has chosen to give him a new nickname which is also a description of one of the tight end’s athletic abilities.
“Twinkle Toes,” Belichick named his tight end which has unexpectedly stuck with teammates around the locker room.
When Gronkowski caught whiff of this nickname during a weekly press conference, he expectedly laughed and welcomed it with open arms.
“He says I got twinkle toes. I’ll take twinkle toes,” Gronkowski said Wednesday to ESPN.com. “I like when I have twinkle toes; that means I’m feeling good. I’m feeling it.”
Not everyone agrees with the use of the nickname. One of Gronkowski’s closest friends on the team fullback James Develin while thinking it’s funny, doesn’t think it’s compatible with the all-pro.
“Anyone that has seen Rob (Gronkowski) play, he’s certainly not twinkle toes,” Develin said to ESPN.com. “It’s just fun, man. Rob (Gronkowski) plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played — hard between the whistles — and then he likes to show his personality and have a little fun with it. That’s great, because at the end of the day, this is still just a game, which we’ve all been playing since we were kids.”
