With NFL training camps set to open in just over two weeks, the return to action is near. 2020 is a unique time for the league with so much talent at each position; the future looks bright. While the season remains a short time away, for a fun experiment, I have identified the top NFL players at each jersey number, starting with 99. This list is made of long time veterans who continue to flourish and remain among the NFL’s elite, along with young talent who have burst onto the scene and staked their claim among the top players in the game. In deciding on each player, I based my decision on their current standing and a future outlook for their career.
One of the most consistent franchises in all of football, the Seattle Seahawks were once again one of the premier contenders in the NFC last season. Led by superstar quarterback Russell Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks won 11 games in 2019, capturing the fifth seed in the playoffs. After falling to the San Fransico 49ers in week 17, failing to capture home field in the playoffs, the Seahawks ultimately lost to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round at Lambeau Field. Next season, Seattle looks to be among the elite teams in the league following the additions of Greg Olsen, Mike Iupati, and Brandon Shell in free agency.
For the second year in a row, the Buffalo Bills reached the playoffs in the 2019 season after the team’s first ten-win season since 1999. After a disappointing loss in Houston that saw them blow a 16-0 lead, the Bills will look to bounce back heading into next season. Led by head coach Sean Mcdermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, the strength once again will be the team’s defense, which ranked 2nd overall in the league last season. After the departure of Tom Brady from the AFC East, the Bills are the odds on favorites by many to capture their first division title in over 20 years, following an offseason that saw them add Stefon Diggs, AJ Klein, Vernon Butler, and Quinton Jefferson in free agency.
The Green Bay Packers came within one game of the Super Bowl last season in the first year for rookie head coach Matt Lafleur. A major reason for this was the team went 8-1 in one-score games and finished undefeated in divisional games. This allowed the Packers to earn a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs. Heading into next season, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will look to build off a season that saw his defense finish ninth overall in points allowed. Following the 2020 draft, the team will look to transform into a power running team following the selection of running back A.J. Dillion, a transformation from a Packers offense that is used to throwing the ball all over the field under past regimes.
With the start of NFL training camps right around the corner and just under 100 days until week one, it’s time to begin to project what the 2020 Green Bay Packers roster will be. The Packers look to return most of their roster from the 2019 NFC championship team; however, there will be many battles at different positions, giving Matt Lafleur and his staff many difficult decisions to make.

The expectations surrounding the Denver Broncos are very high, heading into the 2020 season. After an offseason that saw them add A.J. Bouye, Jurrell Casey, and Melvin Gordon along with wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler inthe draft, the Broncos are a team to watch. The 2019 season was a forgetful one for the Broncos as they finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Most of this was due to the ongoing quarterback carousel. Joe Flacco started the first eight games before getting injured and replaced by Brandon Allen. Ultimately, the Broncos would end the season winning four of their last five games under Drew Lock after he came off injured reserve and injected life into the Denver offense.
Jarrett Stidham, or “stid,” as referred to by those inside Gillette Stadium, get used to hearing that name this upcoming NFL season. For the first time in 20 years, the New England Patriots will no longer have Tom Brady under contract.
The Green Bay Packers endured a lot of success in the 2019 season, although a little luck fell their way also. The Packers achieved a record of 8-1 in one-score games and had to make several plays in the final moments of games to seal victories. This strong record in these games ultimately led to an NFC North division title and a first-round bye. The Packers were able to knock off the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau in the divisional round of the playoffs; however, their luck finally ran out in the NFC Championship game against the formidable San Francisco 49ers. The Packers were run off the field and embarrassed by the 49ers, losing 37-20 and giving up 285 rushing yards in a game that was never close.
