News coming out of the NBA Office this morning is not good for the Atlanta Hawks and more importantly third-year forward John Collins. The league confirms that Collins tested positive for Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide 2. Collins stated in a message to ESPN just moments ago “He didn’t know the supplement contained an illegal component.”
This is a huge blow to the Hawks who just saw star guard Trae Young go down with an ankle injury and now this. Collins is working with the NBPA to begin the appeal process. He is having another productive season this year averaging 17 PPG along with 9 RPG and showing new confidence in his three-point shooting ability knocking down 47% from behind the arch.
If the suspension holds up, Collins will be out of action until December 23rd vs the Cavaliers. This is an interesting time for the league as Collins becomes the third player so early in the season to be suspended for some form of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Policy. The Brooklyn Nets’ Wilson Chandler and Phoenix Suns’ Deandre Ayton both are currently serving 25-game suspensions as well.
