A’s Lose Chapman for the Season

A's lose Chapman for the season

Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman will be out for the rest of the season due to having surgery on his right hip, the team announced on Saturday.

Chapman was diagnosed with right hip tendinitis. After he got a second opinion it was determined that he needed surgery. This season he was hitting .232 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. Losing Chapman will hurt the Athletics offensively and defensively as he was second on the team in home runs, had a team-leading 21 extra-base hits, and is a two-time Gold Glove winner.

In addition to losing Chapman, the Athletics have also lost pitching prospect A.J. Puk to season-ending surgery. Puk is having surgery on his shoulder and hasn’t pitched this season because of inflammation in the shoulder.

“For A.J., obviously, it’s been a tough road for him,” Athletics manager Bob Melvin told reporters. “Back and forth, ramping up, having to shut down. Obviously there’s something going on that he needs to take care of.”

The Athletics have recalled outfielder Seth Brown from their alternate site and added pitcher Daulton Jefferies to the active roster. Chad Pinder and Vimael Machin will probably play third base for the rest of the season.
