Armenia is moving up in the Group Stage

Levon Satamian | June 11th, 2019

Coming off a 3-0 win against Liechtenstein, Armenia looked to move up in the Group Stage on Tuesday when they took on Greece.

Armenia started off the game on the attack. Aleksandre Karapetian went around the goalkeeper of Greece and scored in the eighth minute of play. Followed by Karapetian’s goal, Gevorg Ghazaryan scored in the 32nd minute of play. Armenia went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Greece showed signs of hope, with José Carlos Gonçalves Rodrigues scoring in the 54th minute of play. Greece was playing on the attack for most of the second half, and Armenia was able to counter Greece’s attack, with a goal by Tigran Barseghyan in the 74th minute of play, giving Armenia a 3-1 lead. Kostas Fortounis scored in the 87th minute for Greece, but, Armenia won the game 3-2.

Armenia moved up to third place in Group J. Greece is in fourth place. This was a big win for Armenia in Greece, because it sets them up in a good position to sneak up on Finland, and secure the second spot in Group J. Italy and Finland hold the top two spots in the group, but that can change in September, when Armenia hosts Italy, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Aleksandre Karapetian has been big for Armenia, and if he continues this type of dominance, Armenia will have a good chance of making history, and qualifying for the 2020 UEFA Euro tournament. Arsenal star midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is the cornerstone of this team, and if guys like Karapetian, Ghazaryan, and Barseghyan step up and score goals, to help Mkhitaryan, Armenia could have a good chance of competing in the 2020 UEFA Euro tournament as well.
