The Arizona Cardinals faced the New York Giants on Oct. 20 in Week 7 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are some highlights from the game.
Entering this game, the Cardinals were looking to capture their third consecutive victory. On the road in East Rutherford, NJ, we saw a battle of the rookies as the Cardinals’ first overall pick, Kyler Murray, squared off against the Giants’ sixth overall pick, Daniel Jones.
The Cardinals were able to pull away with a 27-21 win. In the first quarter of the game, the Cardinals quickly score after a pair of 20-yard touchdown runs by Chase Edmonds. The running back played most of the snaps due to David Johnson’s sprained ankle. Within the first 15 minutes of play, Edmonds had two touchdowns; he would finish the game with three scores on 126 yards, the best outing of his career.
The Arizona defense enjoyed making it miserable for Daniel Jones. The rookie was sacked eight times, four of which were courtesy of Chandler Jones. In the first quarter, the Cardinals were able to do something they have not done this season, as linebacker Jordan Hicks intercepted a pass. Despite solid defense, that was the first interception, and it set the tone for the game.
On the home team’s side, the Giants struggled and were plagued by penalties. The Giants suffered their third straight loss as Daniel Jones didn’t have a good game, throwing an interception losing a pair of fumbles. In his return from an ankle injury, running back Saquon Barkley had a 72-yard game and also rushed for a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, the game finally started to become closer. The Giants trailed by a score of 24-21 with less than five minutes to play, but they had the ball on their 25-yard line. The Giants managed to pick up a first down, but after that, things started to go in the Cardinals’ favor. The Arizona defense came up big, leaving the Giants to try to beat a long fourth down attempt with 2:35 on the clock. After a Patrick Peterson sack, Haason Reddick recovered a fumble and the Cardinals set up Gonzalez to kick a field goal.
Next week, the Cardinals will be looking to defeat the 6-1 Saints, led by Teddy Bridgewater. Drew Brees will most likely attempt to come back for this game, which could pose a very big challenge for Arizona. This game is at 1:00 p.m. EST on CBS. After the win against N.Y., the Cardinals’ confidence may be boosted heading into what could be their toughest game this season.
Meanwhile, the Giants will be looking to defeat the 2-3-1 Lions. The Lions aren’t having a great season, as they are in last place in the NFC North. This game will take place at 1:00 p.m. EST and will air on FOX.
