The Los Angeles Lakers are continuing what has been a dominant few months in the world of basketball. Following their championship victory, they’ve sealed the deal as being the NBA’s biggest winner in the offseason. Early Thursday morning, news broke that Anthony Davis will be signing a five year, $190 million contract to stay in Los Angeles.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal includes an opt-out for Davis after the fourth year.

The Lakers had already been among the biggest offseason winners after their additions via trade and free agency. That was under the assumption Davis would be signing a short term deal with the Lakers.

The Lakers revamped roster began forming shortly before the draft when they agreed to a deal to add guard Dennis Schroder from the Oklahoma City Thunder. When free agency kicked off, they added another impact player in big man Montrezl Harrell.
Add in the bargain signing of Wesley Matthews, and the Lakers offseason was off to an incredible start. It continued when center Marc Gasol agreed to join the franchise. Those additions, along with the re-signings of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Markieff Morris, had the Lakers very improved from their 2019-20 championship roster.
The deal was secured on being the league’s biggest offseason winners after the Davis commitment, though. He followed LeBron James in trusting the franchise by signing a long-term deal instead of ensuring he has the ability to opt-out in the coming offseasons.
That trust makes sense, given the team’s success in A.D.’s first year with the franchise. Obviously, he has been impressed with their offseason moves, as well. The Lakers will officially begin their title defense on December 22 when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers.
