Andrew Berry Named General Manager of Cleveland Browns

One goal for the Cleveland Browns this offseason was to find a new general manager. That goal is now accomplished as the Browns reached an agreement with Andrew Berry to be their new top executive on Monday.

At the age of 32, Berry becomes the youngest general manager in the NFL and has signed a five-year deal with the Browns. In addition to being the general manager, he will also be the Browns’ executive vice president of football operations.

The Browns had also interviewed Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager, George Paton, and New England Patriots director of college scouting, Monti Ossenfort, for the job. Berry replaces John Dorsey, who was fired on Dec. 31 after being with the Browns for two years.

Berry is a good choice because he is familiar with the team as he was the Browns’ vice president of player personnel from 2016 to 2018. Before joining the Browns, he worked for the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2015; he was a scouting assistant and then became a pro scout in 2011. In 2012, he became a pro scouting coordinator.

This season, Berry was the vice president of football operations for the Philadelphia Eagles. With the Eagles, he was involved in everything from scouting to contracts to strategy. Berry received high demand from teams this offseason. The Carolina Panthers wanted to interview him for their executive vice president role, but the Eagles denied the Panthers’ request. The Eagles couldn’t deny the Browns because they were considering him for their general manager role, which is a higher-level job than the position he served in with Philadelphia.

The Browns were 6-10 this year and failed to make the playoffs. We’ll see if Berry can make the right moves for the Browns to be better in 2020.
