All But a No-Brainer for Tennessee: Go Get Julio Jones

The Tennessee Titans are undefeated and this Sunday they host the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. They join the Seattle Seahawks as the only three teams in the league without a loss.

An undefeated team through six weeks of an NFL season obviously is doing things right. However, with the trade deadline looming, it could never hurt to see what is potentially available on the block across the league.

Coach Mike Vrabel‘s defense has been susceptible to big plays, but they have come up with the critical stop at the crucial time of games. The offensive line took a hit this past week when Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has played well, building what he did after taking over the position last season. He has even entered the cusp of MVP talk. Derrick Henry leads the league in rushing yards, a year after rumbling to the NFL rushing title. A.J. Brown, who’s back from injury, looks like the receiver he was in his rookie season. Corey Davis, before landing on the team’s Covid list, was finally looking like the receiver the Titans thought they were getting when they drafted him fifth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. A perfect one-two punch in Tannehill’s receiving corp.

Various names were being thrown out there for the Titans to attempt to acquire, this morning on Titans Radio. But of all the names that are allegedly being put on their respective teams’ trading block, one player stands out more than any other. One that would instantly take the Titans to the next level.

The Atlanta Falcons, according to numerous reports, are placing seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, Julio Jones, on the trading block. Jones was slowed by a bum hamstring the first four games of the season. But now healthy, he looked like the Jones of old in the Falcons win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Jones had a pair of touchdown catches. The Falcons, after a dismal start, fired their head coach, and along with Jones, they are also shopping quarterback Matt Ryan. That all but signals a rebuild in Atlanta. This means the cost of obtaining either would likely only cost a team some draft capital. In the case of Jones, it would take the tune of a pair of first-round picks.

Adding a player like Jones to the offense would pay off immediately. That safety that cheats up to attempt to slow down Henry would now have to stay back to help in coverage with Jones, Brown, and Davis.

It’s also a known fact that Jones is Brown’s idol. It’s the reason Brown wears number 11. He was excited last season after the Titans defeated the Falcons, seeking Jones out for the post-game jersey swap, which had become a staple before this new normal of social distancing guidelines. Adding Jones would cause Brown to step up his own game even more.

Adding a proven weapon midseason is a quarterback and a coaching staff’s dream. But one of Jones’ caliber is all but a no brainer. Hopefully, Titans’ general manager Jon Robinson can make it happen, even if the cost is a pair of first-round picks. If they can get it done, don’t they have to pull the trigger?
