Alex Smith Named Comeback Player of the Year

Several players impressed in 2020, but only one deserved Comeback Player of the Year. Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith received the award on Saturday night after a miraculous road back from a severe leg injury that required 17 surgeries.

After missing nearly two years of football, Smith took over at quarterback for Washington following a season-ending injury to Kyle Allen. Smith remained in the role after the benching and subsequent release of second-year headache Dwayne Haskins. He helped lead the Football Team to an NFC East title but was forced out of the playoffs due to a nagging calf injury.

Taylor Heinicke and a strong Washington squad put up a fight against the eventual NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the Football Team came up short, their incredible season deserves bountiful praise.

Smith finished the year with eight appearances (six starts), going 5-1 while completing 168 passes for 1,582 yards and 10 touchdowns. He tossed just five interceptions but was sacked 22 times. He finished just shy of being a unanimous decision for the award. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger fetched one vote.

From Smith’s remarkable comeback to head coach Ron Rivera defeating cancer, the team from Andover, Md., made their fans and community proud in 2020.
