As the deadline shrinks to five hours for Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez to opt-in or out of the final three years of his contract, Alex Cora is doing his best to rile up Red Sox twitter.

Yes, this can mean anything. However, the timing of it is very interesting –– especially given the lack of context from the Red Sox skipper.
Martinez slashed .304/.383/.557 in 2019. While he regressed from his 2018 pedestal, he still proved to be worth so much more than the $23.75 million he earned. However, given the fact he’s a designated hitter with very minimal defensive prowess, combined with him being on the wrong side of 30, makes it increasingly suspect what kind of market Martinez will have.
The 32-year-old has until 5 p.m. ET to decide, so only time will tell what the direction of Martinez will be.
