Projected by many as the potential game of the year, two of the AFC powerhouses clashed Monday night in Baltimore as the reigning super bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs dueled it out with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. Both top five offenses in the league through the first few weeks of the season, the game did not disappoint. The teams combined for 54 points and over 700 yards of total offense in a 34-20 Kansas City victory.
Off to a blazing hot start to begin the game, the Chiefs scored on their first drive after an early Ravens field goal as a Patrick Mahomes three-yard touchdown run capped off a seven-play 69-yard drive to take the early lead. Unable to muster up anything on their next offensive possession, a quick three and out by Baltimore gave the Kansas City offense the ball back with 4:18 to go in the first quarter. Making quick work on offense once again, this time it was a five-yard shovel pass to the fullback, Anthony Sherman, to complete the scoring drive. Up 13-3 quickly with just over 11 minutes played, Andy Reid’s team looked to be in firm control of the game.
However, on the ensuing kickoff, the momentum of the game would change quickly as rookie wide receiver Devin Duvernay returned the kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to bring the Ravens right back in the game as they trailed only 13-10. Virtually unstoppable on offense this night, Mahomes and company would make quick work of their next two offensive possessions as passing touchdowns to Mecole Hardman, and Tyreek Hill put the Chiefs up 27-10 with just under a minute left in the first half. For the Ravens, the story was completely different in the first 30 minutes. Greg Roman’s group could not get any momentum going in their sloppiest half of football this season. Finishing the first part of the game with under 100 yards of total offense, the Chiefs defense stymied the reigning MVP.
Flipping the script in the second half, the Ravens defense would make a huge play on the half’s opening drive as a Darwin Thompson fumble would set their offense up down 17 at their own 21-yard line. Taking advantage of the turnover, Baltimore’s offense would cash in with a field goal, followed by a Nick Boyle five-yard touchdown reception to pull the team within three. Once again in crunch time, the reigning Super Bowl MVP delivered as Mahomes would march the Chiefs down the field for what would ultimately end up being the game-winning score on a two-yard touchdown reception by former number one pick Eric Fisher to seal a 34-20 victory for Kansas City.
Destined to battle later on in the season, Baltimore falls to (2-1). They will look to get back in the win column next week against Washington. After three straight wins to begin the year, the Chiefs will look to keep it going against the red hot Patriots next Sunday.
