Colts Safety Malik Hooker Tears Achilles

Malik Hooker just can’t catch a break. The Indianapolis Colts safety tore his Achilles on Sunday and will miss the remainder of the 2020 season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Hooker suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his rookie year in 2017, battled hip and foot ailments in 2018, tore his meniscus in 2019, and now tore his Achilles in 2020. The former first-round pick has appeared in 35 games (34 starts), recovering two fumbles while intercepting seven passes and defending 11. He has also made 122 tackles, proving his worth in Indianapolis’ secondary.

2020 was supposed to be a huge year for the oft-injured safety as he makes the case for a new contract. The Colts declined his fifth-year option this past offseason, meaning his next game will likely come with a different team.

George Odum and rookie Julian Blackmon will slot in at free safety in Hooker’s absence for now, though the Colts could peruse the free agent and trade markets for improvement at the position.

The 1-1 Colts host the 0-2 New York Jets next Sunday.
