Report: Detroit Lions Sign Taylor Decker to a Six-Year Extension

The Detriot Lions now have their blind-side blocker tied to the franchise through 2027. On Tuesday afternoon, they signed Taylor Decker to a six-year extension worth $85 million that with $37.5 million guaranteed. Decker was selected with the 16th overall selection in the 2016 draft and was the first selection by general manager Bob Quinn.

He has played in 55 games and started them all. He along with Frank Ragnow are the two pieces the Lions have on the offensive line that they have decided to build around. Detroit opted to let Graham Glasgow and Ricky Wagner walk in free agency and didn’t do much to replace them. Halapoulivaati Vaitai was given a massive contract and is not the same caliber tackle that Wagner was.

Decker’s deal puts him fifth-highest in terms of left tackles. He is behind only Laremy Tunsil, Anthony Castonzo, Taylor Lewan, and Nate Solder. For Trent Williams, Alejandro Villanueva, and most notably, David Bakhtiari, this deal is one they will be looking at along with Tunsil’s. Decker is now getting paid more than D.J. Humphries and Dion Dawkins, who both were extended recently.

For Detroit, they get one of their massive contracts out of the way. Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, and Danny Amendola‘s contracts are all up as the top three receivers on the depth chart. Golladay’s market value is estimated to be just below $19 million a year per Spotrac. At $19 million, he would rank as the fourth-highest paid receiver in the league. After the Decker signing, Detroit now has just under $23 million in cap space.
