Report: Mets, Orioles Swap Kevin Smith for Miguel Castro

On a buzzer-beater deal spree, the Mets have acquired Orioles fireball reliever Miguel Castro, 25, in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Kevin Smith.

Castro has a 4.02 ERA this season and is controllable through the 2022 season.

Kevin Smith is a big 23-year-old left-handed starting pitching prospect who ranks 12th on MLB Pipeline’s ranking of the Mets’ top 30 prospects. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, the potential for Smith is very high. Last season, he led all of the Mets’ farm in strikeouts, strikeout rate, and walk-to-strikeout rate. Smith is a little bit of a slower pitcher for his size but can help the Orioles shore up their future rotation.

The Mets now have a really high-upside bullpen with the addition of Castro and at full potential can be a dominant force despite the injuries to the pitching staff.
