Report: Blue Jays Acquire Robbie Ray From Diamondbacks

In a surprising move, the Toronto Blue Jays have added another starter to their already potent rotation. After acquiring Taijuan Walker last week, Ross Atkins and his Buffalo-based club have struck again. Robbie Ray is headed from the west coast to northern New York to join the Blue Jays’ rotation. Toronto will also receive $300K in cash from Arizona. Heading back to the Diamondbacks is southpaw Travis Bergen.

The Blue Jays are clearly going for it all as both Walker and Ray are impending free agents.

Ray, 28, was an All-Star for the Diamondbacks back in 2017. He has shown flashes of dominance amidst his struggles. This season, however, he has allowed 31 walks in 31 innings with a 7.84 ERA.

Bergen, 26, was a prospect taken from the Blue Jays by the San Francisco Giants in the 2018 Rule 5 draft. He pitched briefly for them before landing on the IL with a shoulder strain, thus sending him back to the Blue Jays when he was DFA’d by the Giants. He made his Blue Jays debut just a few days ago.

The Blue Jays, who may not be done trading, continue to add depth to a rotation that is missing Nate Pearson and a couple of other starters to injury ahead of a playoff pursuit.
