The Philadelphia 76ers fired head coach Brett Brown on Monday.

Brown, who had been the coach of the 76ers since 2013, was under contract through the 2021-22 season. He is still owed millions of dollars on his contract. The firing of Brown is expected to be the beginning of changes to the front office, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

“I have a tremendous level of respect for Brett both personally and professionally and appreciate all he’s done for the 76ers organization and the City of Philadelphia,” general manager Elton Brand said in a statement. “He did many positive things during his time here, developing young talent and helping position our team for three straight postseason appearances. Unfortunately, we fell well short of our goals this year and I believe it is best to go in a new direction.”

Brown had a 221-344 record with the Sixers and led them to three playoff appearances. However, they never made it past the Eastern Conference semifinals. This year the 76ers were 43-30 and were eliminated from the playoffs in a first-round sweep.

The 76ers coach search will focus on Los Angeles Clippers’ assistant Ty Lue. Villanova’s Jay Wright is expected to be a candidate, but the Sixers want Lue.
