Jake Fromm: 2020 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Mason Thompson | April 12th, 2020

Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia, #11

Height: 6’2″

Weight: 220 lbs

Eligibility: Junior

Games Watched: Alabama (National Championship), Tennessee (2019), Auburn (2019), South Carolina (2019), Florida (2019), LSU (SEC Championship 2019), Baylor (2020).

Fromm is a polarizing figure in the scouting community. Lots of people are low on him, while some are high on him. I put my own eyes on Fromm’s tape and decide for myself.

Accuracy8/10 Sometimes lets passes sail behind his receivers. Very good on comebacks and back-shoulder fades. Some throws make you wonder how he’s able to do it, while others make you wonder how he can’t.
Arm Strength7.5/10 Not as bad as people have made it seem. Lots of throws were underthrown that could’ve resulted in touchdowns that ended up just being big chunk gains. Long sideline throws take a long time to develop and the throw takes longer to get there with his arm strength.
Decision Making8.5/10 Doesn’t take too many risks, which is a good and bad thing. Good at reading and keying on defenders. Sometimes eats sacks that he shouldn’t take instead of throwing the ball away.
Progressions 9/10 Works through his progressions quickly and smoothly. He knows where his check-down is when he needs to use it.
Poise6.5/10 Panics under pressure. More often then not he’ll chuck some balls up in the air that are lucky to not get intercepted. Takes a lot of sacks instead of throwing the ball away.
Footwork 7/10 Not too urgent and not too slow. With ample protection, he’ll get the ball there on time.
Pocket Awareness7/10 Panics under pressure. He doesn’t have the mobility to slide outside of the pocket and create plays on his own. Will take unnecessary sacks instead of throwing the ball away.
Mechanics 9/10 Clean delivery and quick snap release to get the ball out of his hand.
Anticipation 7.5/10 Quick presnap guidance and knows where he can win. Great on quick routes but needs work on plays where he has to sit in the pocket longer.
Run Ability 1/5 40 rushing yards in his college career says it all. Georgia didn’t use him much in this regard but doesn’t have the quickness to make it a strength.
Injury4.5/5 Broken non-throwing hand in 2018. Ankle scare in SEC Championship game. Nothing too concerning here.
Overall

75.5/100 I wanted to like Fromm more but saw lots of flaws in his game. He does some things great, but his discrepancies are clear. He will need to sit behind an aging veteran to help combat some of these flaws. With some development, I could see him becoming a starter, but right now, I just don’t see it.

Round Grade: Late-Third Round, Projected Draft Position: Third-Fourth Round. Player Comp: Kyle Allen
