One of Italian soccer’s all-time greats, Daniele De Rossi has finally decided to hang it up and retire from the sport. De Rossi played 18 seasons for the Serie A club Roma and signed with Argentinean club Boca Juniors this past July on a one-year contract. De Rossi played on the Italian national team from 2004-2017, including a World Cup championship in 2006, as well as playing for the Italian U19, U20, and U21 teams before that.
De Rossi appeared in only five matches for Boca this season before deciding it was finally time to head home for good. Spending pretty much his whole career in Roma, he is a legend for the club that sadly never won a Serie A title but finished in the top three in ten different seasons. De Rossi finished his career second in appearances for Roma only behind another Italian great, Francesco Totti, whom he took over the captaincy of the club from in 2017 for his final two seasons with Roma.
De Rossi was an elite member of the Italian national squad. He ended his national career with the fifth most caps with 117 and 11th in goals scored with 21, which is impressive for someone not quite known for his goal-scoring abilities. With De Rossi’s retirement that leaves only one player left from the 2006 World Cup squad, the timeless wonder Gianluigi Buffon who is back with Juventus in Serie A this season.
What will De Rossi do now? The 36-year-old said he wants to spend more time with his family. Can he really stay away from the game though? It most likely will not be very long before we see one of soccer’s brightest in the coach’s box. Time will tell.
