Keep Your Eye On: Brendan Gallagher, Montreal Canadiens

Dom Lunardo  | November 20th, 2019

“The little engine that could”, “David vs. Goliath”, “You’re too small to play this game”. Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher has probably heard all of those catchphrases over the course of his minor and professional career as a hockey player. Standing at a whopping 5’9 (and that’s being generous), “Gally” is certainly not one of the biggest players on the ice by any means. His game is certainly not flashy or pretty to watch, but man oh man, can this guy play the sport of hockey.

Since entering the league, Brendan Gallagher has proven time and time again to his critics that whatever he lacks in size, he certainly makes up for with his will, grit, and direct/“in your face” style of play. The die-hard and knowledgeable fans out in La Belle Province (aka Montreal, Quebec) have welcomed Gallagher as one of their own, and in just a few short seasons, the 27-year-old, Edmonton, Alberta product has become a fan favorite for the “Tricolore”.

If you look across the National Hockey League landscape, there are few forwards with Gallagher’s stature that have the ability to change the outcome of a game like he can. Notwithstanding Patrick Kane, Brayden Point, and Cam Atkinson, Gallagher is one of a kind in his own right for a variety of different reasons.

Known for his tenacity on pucks, “dog on a bone” mantra, and his fearlessness in front of goal, Gallagher never cheats on effort and that’s quite evident in his play. An absolute fan-favorite of Head Coach, Claude Julien, his relentless abundance of energy has captivated hockey fans in the Quebec area, and his ability to score has provided a new element in the 27-year old’s all-around game. His work ethic is contagious and there’s plenty to celebrate in his approach and preparation to the daily “grind” of being a pro in the NHL.

Heading into Tuesday night’s action, Gallagher has posted 16 points (9 goals, 7 assists) in 20 games and is a + 8 on the year. His beloved Canadiens are also an impressive 11-5-4, as we approach the quarter mark of yet another NHL campaign. It’s safe to say that they’ve played some good hockey to start the season, and Gallagher has been a big part of it. As the season unfolds before our very eyes, Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens is certainly on a young, and exciting “Habs” team. We’ll be watching every step of the way. Will you?
