Week five was not nice to the IDP report last week. Whether it was injuries or underperformance not many guys came up big on defense this week that wasn’t in the top three tiers. It looked like Clay Matthews was off to a hot start, but a broken jaw put that to a halt. My sleeper Todd Davis had a good game and Eric Weddle had a busy day. Unfortunately, the rest of the gang for my special first quarter addition came up short. The IDP game can be a mean beast if your guys don’t get the consistency and snaps to make a play or get those points tallied.
Here is the list from last week with who did and didn’t show up on Sunday.
Robert Quinn: 1 solo tackles, 1 pass defended
Nick Williams: 3 solo tackles, 1 pass defended
Clay Matthews: 5 tackles (4 solo), 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack
Terrell Suggs: 0 tackles
Eric Weddle: 7 tackles
Quincy Williams: 3 tackles
Todd Davis: 8 tackles
So now on to next week and a busy week six!
Defensive Line
Brian Burns, Carolina Panthers
Some designations have Burns set as an outside linebacker, but I’m saving that spot. Coming off a Defensive Rookie of the Month accolade, Burns had a breakout game last week that was topped off with scoring a touchdown. Now he gets a week six matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who he got his first career sack against in week two. Momentum carrying him into next week is carrying him into the must-own territory.
Linebacker
Devin Bush, Pittsburgh Steelers
If Bush isn’t owned by some weird happenstance chance, then jump on him now! I feel he got snubbed for Defensive Rookie of the Month, but he is quickly turning in to what Ryan Shazier was going be for the Steelers before his heartbreaking injury. He has 45 tackles, with one sack, an interception, and three forced fumbles. He should continue to see the snaps and making plays especially with a matchup Sunday facing a Chargers offense just getting Melvin Gordon back and wanting to establish the run right out the gate. For those dynasty IDP players, find a way to get him on your team. With IDP though, never overpay, but he can help win dynasties all pun intended.
Defensive Back
Janoris Jenkins, New York Giants (Thursday Night)
Jenkins has been one of the bright spots for an atrocious Giants defense through five weeks. He has 26 tackles, six passes defended, and two interceptions on the season and have an intriguing matchup Thursday night. While on paper it seems a blowout, but for IDP it’s more than that. The Patriots have allowed 122 solo tackles to defensive backs. If the Giants happen to give them any fits, Jenkins could be in for a big game.
Sleeper
Will Redmond, DB, Green Bay Packers
Depending on the injury to Darnell Savage, who was in a walking boot, Redmond may be on call. If Savage misses Monday night’s game due to the ankle, Redmond is the next starting safety up. He stepped up during the Dallas Cowboys matchup with 11 tackles total when filling up for Savage and looks to keep it up against the Lions. If his snaps continue to climb, he faces a team that has allowed an average of 20 solo tackles to opposing defensive backs so far in 2019. He’s a nice sneaky play if looking to chase points with guys on bye weeks.
