New York Jets: Cut Jachai Polite – Strange End to Mike Maccagnan Era

The Mike Maccagnan era for the New York Jets is now closed, and it ends it the strangest way possible. One of his final draft picks has been cut by the Jets — Jachai Polite.

After a lot of speculation, it has finally come to fruition. As the cut down to 53 has concluded, a name no one thought would be among them at the start of training camp is. That being said, camp and the preseason rolled on, the limited practice time and limited preseason usage led to people thinking that he could be cut, and he did.

Why did he end up getting cut, though?

This is only speculation on my part, but I believe that Adam Gase and Gregg Williams wanted someone else. They didn’t think Polite would be a fit. If that’s the case, they need to see how the other players do fit. That said, they should’ve given him a chance.

Who did they want?

Again, speculation, but, based on what the Jets need, a cornerback would’ve been a good pick in the third round (whether they traded down or stayed where they were). There were five corners selected between the time the Jets selected Polite and eventually Trevon Wesco. The two best fits for the Jets would’ve been Michigan CB Justin Layne and Notre Dame CB Julian Love.

After the firing of Maccagnan, no player who was selected by him was safe, because the new general manager had no ties to him. No matter what the circumstances, this is effectively the end of the Maccgnan era, and it’s the strangest way to end.
