DraftKings Around the Horn August 16th, 2019

Joel Dorcas |August 16th, 2019

A typical Friday awaits us tonight as a full schedule of games is on tap. Paying up for pitching is very likely the strategy tonight as there is no shortage of good to great arms available to us. Let’s break down some picks and try to budget our salaries accordingly, we all know what we gotta do, it’s time to go Around the Horn!

PITCHER

Charlie Morton TB $11,600

As mentioned earlier, numerous options at pitcher tonight. The two top-priced options –Justin Verlander and Charlie Morton, are my favorite and it’s pretty easy to make an argument slotting either as your number one pitcher. Morton gets the slight edge as he will save you some bank($800). He draws a weaker opponent in the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers rank second-last in runs scored heading into yesterday’s action just two ahead of the Miami Marlins with 432. It’s pretty clear that the Tigers have an uninspiring lineup. They have the second-highest K rate at 25.9% and their wOBA is a measly .290 which is also second-last. Morton should breeze through this one with relative ease.

INFIELD

Dom Nunez COL C $3,600

Dom Nunez profiles as a very interesting piece as he is relatively cheap and gets the huge advantage of playing at Coors Field. Nunez, who made his major league debut Tuesday, became only the seventh player in franchise history to go deep in his first game as a pro. At the AAA level, Nunez has put up good power numbers. In 61 games Nunez had 17 taters with a .921 OPS. His bat could really play well at Coors, as he has attained a 49.3 percent fy-ball rate at the minor league level. The main issue here is playing time, fellow catcher Tony Wolters is having a fine season so make sure to take note of who starts.

Willy Adames TB SS $3,600

This is one of my favorites for tonight. This oozes with value. Adames has swung a hot stick of late. In his last 16 games heading into last night, Adames is 18-for-54(.333, 5HRs, 10 RBI, 14 Runs). Adames and the Rays will face off against left-hander Daniel Norris and the Tigers. Right-handed hitters are chiming in at a .295 clip with a .351 wOBA versus Norris. Norris is also prone to giving up home runs. His 1.72 HR/9 ratio ranks him sixth-worst amongst starting pitchers.

OUTFIELD

Raimel Tapia COL $4,500

Tapia has excelled since stepping in for injured teammate David Dahl. His previous ten games prior to last night have been outstanding. A .415 clip and an average of 9.3 DK pts per game. Like many Rockies this season, Tapia feasts at home averaging 7.3 DK pts per game, on the road his average dips to just 4.6. Tapia and the Rockies draw Sandy Alcantara who has given up 11 bombs to left-handed hitters this season. He also carries a nasty 5.57 FIP to lefty bats.

Randal Grichuk TOR $4,100

The month of August has been really good to the former first-rounder. A .333 mark over 54 plate appearances to go along with 5 dingers, 10 ribeye’s and 10 runs make Grichuk a fine selection at this price tag. The Seattle Mariners rank as the second-worst team in baseball in HR/9 given up at 1.73. They are also fourth-worst in team ERA at 5.16 and only strike out 7.8 per nine innings which ranks them at the bottom as well, second-worst in MLB.
