7&7 For the Week of June 24th

 John Supowitz | July 2nd, 2019

You thirsty? Of course, you are. Let’s kick off the holiday weekend with a 7&7.

You know the rules: 7 best hitters of the week

DJ LeMahieu 2B New York Yankees

I don’t have a rubric when I write this weekly piece, but if I did, LeMahieu’s names would be on it. Another week of dominant numbers including a league-leading .625 AVG, 15 hits, 1.083 SLG.  and 10 RBI to earn American League Player of The Week.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. OF Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have cornered the market in the getting the: when people mention the future of the Blue Jays, many mention Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Cavan Biggio, Bo Bichette, sons of talented 90’s players. Lourdes Gurriel had a career .323 AVG, 247 HR, and 1,077 RBI for the Cuban National Series and a 1992 Gold Medal Winner with the Cuban National Team, his son is looking to follow in his footsteps. Gurriel Jr. led the league with five home runs this week, and has already exceeded his home run total in his 2018 rookie season in 18 fewer games,

Aaron Judge  RF New York Yankees

In England, you call a judge, “My Lord.” So Aaron My Lord traveled across the pond hit an opposite-field home run in the first game, then proceeded to walk three times in game two, giving him a league-best .684 OBP and .571 AVG good enough for second best.

Gleyber Torres  2B/SS New York Yankees

Yankee haters are probably not happy I’m going heavy on the Bronx Bombers this week. They scored 29 runs in two games so it’s tough not to. Torres was third in the American League in AVG, behind Judge and LeMahieu, third in OBP, behind Judge and LeMahieu, but the leader in the American League in walk percentage.

Eric Hosmer 1B San Diego Padres

The Padres are still a year or two from competing in the National League. San Diego signed Hosmer in 2017 as that first step, followed by Manny Machado. This week he was one of the best in the National League-leading the league in AVG with .542 and hits with 13.

Jackie Bradley Jr. CF Boston Red Sox

When two teams score 50 runs in just two games, you’re going to put some players in there, the Yankees got the better of the Red Sox, but you can’t Bradley Jr.’s play. He had the best OBP from a non-Yankee last week fourth overall, to go along with a .500 AVG.

Shohei Ohtani– DH Los Angeles Angels

The defending American League Rookie of the Year is continuing his promising career, even after having Tommy John surgery. Not seeing him on the mound just means we have more opportunities to see his bat. Already with a cycle this season, he hit .455 this week including a multi-home run game on Sunday against the Athletics.

R.I..P. Tyler Skaggs (1991-2019)
