Tyler Skaggs was born on July 13, 1991, in California. He would go on to dominate High School hitters in and around Santa Monica and ultimately get drafted by the Los Angeles Angels with the 40th pick in the 2009 MLB Draft.
His debut as a 21-year-old lefty went fairly well on August 22, 2012, beating the Miami Marlins and going 6.2 IP while only allowing two ER. Skaggs would struggle with his control for the first few seasons and on August 13, 2014, Tyler had Tommy John Surgery to fix his UCL.
He would come back in 2016 and showed improvement in his control and command. Pitching only 49.2 innings he struck out 50 while walking 23. He would improve even further the following year going 85 innings with a 76/28 K/BB rate. Last year he started to shine and in only his 26-year-old season he threw 125.1 innings and had a very good 129/40 K/BB rate. Tyler was poised to shine this season as a healthy 27-year-old and bring stability to an often-depleted Angels staff as their ace.
The young left-hander passed away today in Texas. The cause of death has not been released as of this article. We can only say that a talent has been taken way too soon. We, at The Scorecrow, offer our condolences to Tyler’s friends, family, and teammates in this difficult time.
