Kyler Murray’s Unhappiness May Raise a Bigger Question

It’s that time of year again. NFL teams are gearing up for training camp which means the release of Madden 20 is just over a month away.

Over the past few weeks, the widely popular video game released their player ratings for the upcoming edition, which features the NFL’s reigning MVP Lamar Jackson on the cover.

This year’s Madden Elite 99 Club features Chiefs and defending Super Bowl champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald, Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore and Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Jackson himself is the third-rated quarterback behind Mahomes and Seattle’s Russell Wilson.

Other players have shared their disgust at their ratings as well as the ratings of other players. One player in particular who has been the most critical of his rating is Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. The 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year is beyond dismayed with his mediocre 77 rating.

One question it does bring up is how he managed to win the aforementioned award in the first place.

The other candidates for the honor included Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, who was all but a lock prior to missing the last month of the season with an injury. He’s rated 88.

Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown made a late run at stealing the hardware. He is rated at 81, which is arguably low.

Brown’s former college teammate and current Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, who also made a late charge in December, received a rather disrespectful 78 rating himself.

In terms of quarterbacks, Murray just missed the top 20 overall, coming in at No. 21. His 77 rating is one point higher than Jameis Winston, Jared Goff, and Bengals rookie Joe Burrow.

As disgruntled and dismayed as he may be, the bigger picture for Murray is the addition of, according to the Madden ratings, the No. 2 wide receiver in football, DeAndre Hopkins (98 overall). He joins veteran Larry Fitzgerald (83) and Christian Kirk (78) in the Cardinals’ receiving unit.

Either the Madden rating system is deeply flawed or Kyler Murray won an award that belongs on another player’s mantle. You decide.
