The Boston Red Sox announced on Thursday that ace pitcher Chris Sale will have Tommy John surgery on his left elbow.
On March 5, it was announced that Sale had a strained flexor tendon. He had recently begun a throwing program but was still experiencing discomfort in his elbow, which he has had for the last couple of weeks, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.
Sale, signed a five-year, $150 million extension with the Red Sox last March. In 2017 he led the American League in strikeouts and was part of the 2018 World Series championship team. Last year, however, he struggled and was shut down in August because of a left elbow injury. Sale finished the season with a 6-11 record and career-worst 4.40 ERA.
Losing Sale for the 2020 season is a big loss for the Red Sox as he was one of, if not their best pitcher. Another reason this is a huge loss is the Red Sox don’t have David Price anymore as he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Red Sox rotation right now consists of Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi, and Martin Perez. The final two spots in the rotation are unknown at this time. With Sale out for the season, Rodriguez will probably be the opening day starter when the season begins.
