Report: Panthers Release Eric Reid

The Carolina Panthers have made their next move in the 2020 NFL Free Agency, releasing safety Eric Reid. This comes just one day after the Panthers signed safety Tre Boston to a three-year deal.

Reid confirmed the news with the following tweet:

Reid started his professional football career playing with the San Francisco 49ers, who drafted him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, 18th overall.  He spent five years with the 49ers before joining the Carolina Panthers franchise in 2018.

During Reid’s time with San Francisco, he recorded 10 interceptions for 205 yards, 34 pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Reid also posted a total of 318 tackles in his five years in San Francisco, 257 solo tackles and 61 assists with four tackles for loss.

In the two years Reid played for Carolina he posted one interception, one pass deflection, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. He recorded 201 tackles with the Panthers, 147 solo and 54 assists and 10 tackles for loss.

This move from Carolina comes to a surprise to some as Reid seemed to be a good fit for the team, but there are those on the other end of the spectrum who believe this is a result of Reid’s public displeasure with this year’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
