Panthers Release Veteran Safety Colin Jones

The Carolina Panthers released veteran safety Colin Jones on Monday afternoon. Jones spent last season on Carolina’s roster as a reserve safety, and for the last two years, he was the captain of the special teams unit.

Jones started his professional career in 2011 when he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers and was traded to Carolina for the 2012 season. He played in 124 games with Carolina and 137 games in total.

In the 2019 season, Jones led the special team tackles and tied for second place in franchise history with 61 career special teams tackles. He finished the 2019 season with nine tackles (two of them solo tackles and seven of the assists) and converted a fake punt.

2017 and 2018 were his best years with the Panthers. In 2017, he posted an interception, a forced fumble, and 23 combined tackles. In 2018, he scored his first career touchdown and also recorded interceptions and forced fumbles.
