In a surprising turn of events, the Atlanta Falcons are releasing running back Dovanta Freeman, according to NFL Network’ss Ian Rapoport.

The move will save more than $3 million againsst the cap for the Falcons going into free agency. The Falcons have had a troubling couple of seasons following their playoff contention for several years.

Freeman was a great player at times but couldn’t stay on the field enough. In his six seasons with Atlanta, he made the Pro Bowl twice in 2015 and 2016, led the NFL in raining touchdowns in 2015, was in the Super Bowl in 2016 and had many other recognitions.

He has 3,972 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns on the ground plus 2,015 receiving yards with 11 receiving touchdowns. Over his last two seasons, he only has played in 16 games.

This move comes right after the Falcons cut longtime starting cornerback Desmond Trufant.
