The Boston Red Sox 40-man roster has officially reached 40, as the team claimed right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza off waivers from the New York Mets.

In nine outings last season, the 30-year-old Mazza posted a 5.51 ERA, but his FIP was 3.52 and his FIP- was 81. Also, he dazzled in the minor leagues –– posting a 3.61 ERA, a 3.60 FIP, and a strikeout rate of 20.4 percent.
It was an incredibly small sample size (16.1 innings pitched) for the former 27th-round pick of the Minnesota Twins, but the Red Sox view him as worthy of being additional depth in case of injury; which was a massive issue last season for the team when Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, and David Price missed extended time with injuries.
