Over the past two seasons, Trent Frederic has become a well-known name to Bruins fans. The former first-round pick made his NHL debut last year and appeared in 15 games in the NHL. Although Frederic brought a physical style of play, he failed to make much of an impact offensively. The St. Louis native also appeared in two games for the Bruins this year but failed to record a point. While Frederic has spent the majority of the season in Providence, he has impressed his coaches of late.
In 28 games this season, Frederic has four goals and 13 assists. The 21-year-old has also been effective on the penalty kill where he has two shorthanded goals. Frederic’s best stretch, however, has come in the past two weeks as he has seven points in his last four games. In his last two games, he has been a playmaker with four assists and a plus-minus of three.
Furthermore, Frederic’s play has been impressive, given how his season began. Although Frederic has four goals this year, his first one did not come until Nov. 22. Since being sent down to Providence after a brief stint in Boston, Frederic has been held scoreless in just four of the 13 games he has played in.
While the Bruins have a deep forward group, Frederic has been a dominant two-way presence in Providence. It is the player he was always predicted to be and he is finally doing it a consistent level.
Due to Frederic’s recent run, he is now tied for fifth on Providence in points. He is also averaging 0.59 points a game and has already landed 53 shots on net. Frederic has not been an offensive force like his teammate Jack Studnicka, but his recent play has provided hope that he could contribute at the NHL level.

Furthermore, Frederic has not let his improved offense change his physical style of play. The Bruins’ prospect made a name for himself in his NHL debut by getting into a fight in his first game. He has shown he will not back down from any challenge and continued to stand up for his teammates.
While Frederic is unlikely to return to the NHL soon, his recent play is hard to ignore. The Bruins’ offense has struggled of late, and if Bruce Cassidy looks to shake things up, he could add a physical presence to the Bruins bottom six. Regardless of how the season plays out, Frederic has proved his value of late and been one of Providence’s best players.
