The New Orleans Saints faced the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Oct. 13 in Week 6 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.
The New Orleans Saints traveled to Jacksonville on Sunday to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Stadium. The Saints led the all-time series between the two teams and had won the last three games versus the Jaguars, including the last meeting between the two teams. The Saints were favored to win with a 57.8% win probability, and New Orleans not only met the odds of victory but also added to the all-time series win by defeating the Jaguars in a low-scoring 13-6 victory.
New Orleans started the game with possession of the ball but was unable to produce any points on the board in their opening drive, nor was Jacksonville able to convert their first possession into a scoring drive. The two teams traded downs in their next possessions, and Will Lutz kicked a 47-yard field goal on the Saints’ third possession of the game to take the lead with two-and-a-half minutes left in the first quarter. The following Jaguars possession was nearly ended early when Gardner Minshew was sacked, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Jacksonville’s running back Leonard Fournette for the save. Minshew then threw an incomplete pass, ending the possession. In the last play of the first quarter, Teddy Bridgewater connected with Tedd Ginn, Jr. for a 27-yard pass. The first quarter ended with New Orleans still on top, 3-0.
The Saints began the second quarter at the New Orleans 44-yard line and was unable to put any points on the board in their first possession of the second quarter. However, the Jaguars were also unable to produce any points on their first possession. It wasn’t until the following Jacksonville possession that ended after 13 plays when the Jaguars put three points on the board as Josh Lambo kicked a field goal with 2:47 left in the half and tied the game at three. The following Saints possession was marred by sacks after Bridgewater was pummeled twice back-to-back, the first time by Josh Allen and on the next play, Dawaune Smoot. Jacksonville had one more shot to take the lead before the end of the first half, but the Jaguars were unable to make the necessary plays and after the fourth play, Minshew kneeled to end the quarter. The score remained unchanged in the last three minutes of play, and the score remained tied entering halftime.
The Jaguars received the ball first to open the second half of the game and produced a 20-yard pick-up on the first play when Minshew connected with Dede Westbrook. On third down, Minshew threw his first interception (hauled in by Marshon Lattimore) on a pass intended for Chark. New Orleans played for nearly five minutes on the following possession for 11 plays before Will Lutz finished out the possession with a 21-yard field goal kick, taking the lead from Jacksonville with over 13 minutes left in the quarter. Jacksonville was not to be outdone on their next possession, and after a lengthy 10-play possession, Josh Lambo put three more points on the board with a 32-yard field goal, evening the score again at six with just over three minutes to play in the quarter. The third quarter ended up being the quarter of lengthy plays as New Orleans started their next possession in the third quarter and ended it in the fourth quarter. The Saints were able to get off six plays before the end of the third and paused on the Jacksonville 44-yard line.
The Saints kept the possession for six more plays and a timeout in the fourth quarter before Bridgewater threw a pass that Jared Cook hauled in for the four-yard touchdown, the first of the fourth quarter, giving New Orleans the 13-16 lead with almost 12 minutes left in the game. In the first Jacksonville possession of the fourth quarter, the Jaguars were charged a timeout when they requested a review of an incomplete pass on the field after believing they saw defensive pass interference, but the ruling on the field was upheld. The Jaguars were unable to convert after the call, and both teams went three-and-out on their next possessions. On what would end up being New Orleans’ final possession, the Saints ran as much time off of the clock as possible. The possession consisted of three plays, a timeout, three more plays, and then the two-minute warning, after which Bridgewater rushed the ball twice and kneeled once to end the game.
The Saints won by a score of 13-6 and enter their next game against the Chicago Bears with only one loss. Meanwhile, the Jaguars will go into next week’s matchup against the winless Cincinnati Bengals Bengals with only two wins and four losses.
