The New York Jets faced the New England Patriots on Sept. 22 in Week 3 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.
The Patriots came into this game as heavy favorites, and they delivered. The Pats handily pulled off a 30-14 victory over the winless New York Jets on Sunday. The Patriots advance to 3-0, off to a hot start having outscored opponents 106-17 so far this season. The Jets, meanwhile, fall to 0-3. All three of their games have been started by a different quarterback.
The Jets started with the ball and crossed just over midfield before punting. The Patriots’ opening offensive drive resulted in a Sony Michel touchdown, giving them a quick 7-0 lead. The Jets got the ball back and punted, and Tom Brady hit Phillip Dorsett for a 25-yard touchdown. To continue the pattern, when the Jets got the ball back, they soon punted, and the Patriots got seven more points on a Julian Edelman touchdown. The Jets punted on their next drive, as did the Patriots … and then the Jets punted, and the Patriots punted, and the Jets punted, and the Patriots punted. Then, the first half concluded.
The Pats got the ball but were forced to punt on the first drive of the second half, but they got the football back when Devin McCourty intercepted Luke Falk. Stephen Gostkowski hit a field goal, the Jets got the ball back and punted, and Rex Burkhead found the end zone for another Patriots touchdown, giving them the 30-0 lead. The Jets’ next drive ended in another punt, but Gunner Olszewski muffed the kick and Arthur Maulet scooped it up for a touchdown. The two sides exchanged punts, and the Pats got the ball back. Rookie Jarrett Stidham entered the game for the Pats given their big lead, but his third pass attempt was picked off by Jamal Adams for a touchdown. The Pats then punted twice with a Jets punt in between. The Jets couldn’t get a first down on their final offensive drive, and the Pats took over, icing the game.
Brady completed 28 of 42 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Stidham was two-for-three for 14 yards, plus a pick. Rex Burkhead ran for 47 yards and a touchdown on 11 attempts, while Sony Michel had nine carries for 11 yards and a score. Josh Gordon had six catches for 83 yards, plus a rush for a yard. Julian Edelman, who exited near halftime due to a chest injury, managed to haul in seven passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Dorsett had six catches for 53 yards and a touchdown, plus two rushes for 12 yards. Tight end Ryan Izzo hauled in his one target for a 41-yard play. Jamie Collins led the defense with two sacks and seven total tackles.
On the other side of the football, Falk completed 12 of 22 passes for 98 yards and an interception. The team’s two defensive touchdowns came from their punt unit and their defensive secondary. Le’Veon Bell had 18 carries for 35 yards and four catches for an additional 28 yards, while Ty Montgomery rushed twice for one yard. Former Patriot Braxton Berrios led the Jets in receiving yards with 29 on two catches. Jamison Crowder had two catches for 25 yards and Robby Anderson had three catches for all 11 yards.
The Jets, heading into their bye week, have a lot of work to do as they prepare for a Week 5 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. As for the Patriots, they will be tasked with preparing for the Buffalo Bills, who are 3-0 but have been involved in several tight contests.
