The Dallas Cowboys faced the Washington Redskins on Sept. 15 in Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are the highlights from the game.
On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to FedEx Field to face the Washington Redskins in the Redskins’ home opener. This was the 119th meeting between the two teams, one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL dating back to the early 1960s. Dallas leads the all-time series 72-45-2. The biggest pregame hype surrounded Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott’s perfect passer rating the week before when Dallas was victorious against the New York Giants, and Prescott recorded impressive numbers in this game as well. The Cowboys were able to add another victory to their win column in the series with a ten-point win over the Redskins, 31-21.
The game started with the Redskins taking possession of the ball but they were unable to convert the possession into points. Dallas was unsuccessful in putting any points on the board during their first possession, too. The Cowboys’ second possession ended with an interception by Washington safety Monte Nicholson, and the first quarter concluded. Adrian Peterson was the first player to put points on the board when he rushed for a one-yard touchdown following the Redskins’ interception. The extra point was good, and Washington took the 7-0 lead with 14:15 left in the second quarter. Peterson’s touchdown moved him up in ranks in all-time rushing touchdowns, and he now holds the fifth spot in the record book. In the next Dallas possession, the Cowboys were able to tie up the game after Prescott threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Devin Smith, and Brett Maher kicked the extra point with just over six minutes left in the game. Prescott threw another touchdown pass in the Cowboys’ next possession to Jason Witten for two yards, and the Cowboys took the lead, 14-7, with nine seconds left in the first half of the game, a lead they would hold into halftime.
The second half of the game opened with Dallas’ possession and after nine plays, Prescott threw a nine-yard pass to Amari Cooper for the third Cowboys touchdown in as many possessions. The Cowboys extended their lead with just under ten minutes left in the third quarter to 21-7. Washington was able to convert their next possession into points following 11 plays, and a nine-yard pass from Case Keenum to Paul Richardson and closed the lead to 21-14. The Cowboys’ next possession also consisted of eleven plays, which lead into the final quarter of the game, and after a three-yard touchdown by Cooper was nullified for offensive holding, Maher ended the possession with a 25-yard field goal to widen the gap by another three points, 24-14.
Washington was unable to convert their next possession into any points, while Dallas scored another touchdown after Ezekiel Elliot rushed for a two-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 31-14 with 5:07 left in the game. The Redskins scored the final points of the game following a roughing the passer penalty that moved them 15 yards, and Terry McLaurin caught a one-yard pass from Keenum, closing the lead to ten points with 2:17 left in the game. Dallas executed six plays in their final possession before the final whistle blew, giving the Cowboys the victory over their divisional rivals.
The post-game hype rightfully surrounded Prescott as he executed another impressive game, completing 26 of 30 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 69 rushing yards.
