A former Andy Reid defensive mainstay hit the free agent market on Tuesday. Defensive end Vinny Curry was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday, following one season with the team.
Following an injury riddled 2018 campaign in Tampa Bay the team determined that the 30-year old defensive lineman was expendable. Appearing in 12 games this season, Curry was limited to a measly 24 quarterback pressures. The second lowest total since his rookie season.
Curry was drafted by Andy Reid in 2012, Reid’s last season at the helm of the Philadelphia Eagles. Through his 7-year career, Curry has logged 24.5 sacks and 70 QB hits.
Following a 47 pressure season in 2017, one in which the Eagles won the Super Bowl, Curry signed a three-year deal to become a mainstay in Tampa’s 4-3 defensive scheme. However, with a coaching change this offseason, Tampa Bay will be moving to a 3-4.
How would he fit with the Chiefs?
Curry is certainly not an every down starter and is likely on the downturn of his career. But, he could be incredibly valuable to a team that is making the schematic switch to a 4-3 defense.
Andy Reid tends to get the best out of his players, especially one’s he has a relationship with from previous stops. This should open the door for a player-coach reunion in Kansas City.
At this point in time, the current defensive front for the Chiefs would have little to no experience in a 4-3 NFL scheme. This could prove to be problematic, at least from the start. Adding some 4-3 experience to this defensive front-seven would only prove to be beneficial for defense in desperate need of change and energy.
Sure, Curry may not be the player that he once was, but he certainly could serve as a rotational piece on a cheap deal. His playoff and Super Bowl experience certainly could prove valuable as well.
Should the Chiefs sign Vinny Curry?
