Report: Red Sox Claim Southpaw Reliever

Chaim Bloom and Brian O’Halloran’s inaugural move as Chief Baseball Officer and General Manager was claiming left-handed reliever Josh Osich off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

The newest Red Sox southpaw is coming off of a season in which he posted a 4.66 ERA, a 4.96 FIP, and a K-rate of 22.4 percent. While none of his numbers are eye-popping, there is definitely a lot to like about the 31-year-old.

For starters, he’s a lefty that can provide help as a specialist, or potentially give you more than three outs if need be. His 67.2 innings pitched over 57 outings last season ranked tied for 38th among 158 qualifying relievers.

Osich isn’t going to be a world-beater by any stretch, but he has a lot of promise on his changeup (.221 xwOBA against in 2018) that he shied away from for some reason last year, dropping his usage rate from 26.4 percent in 2018 to 4.7 percent last year.

Not a bad first move by the Red Sox new tandem at CBO and General Manager.
