Sullivan: Patriots Need a December to Remember

The New England Patriots head into the month of December with an 8-3 overall record and another AFC East title almost securely in the bag. However, if they want to hoist that Lombardi Trophy in February, they need to get the ball rolling.

For the first time in months, fans saw a healthy Patriots offense last week, with the return of Rob Gronkowski and the explosive running of rookie running back Sony Michel.

It wasn’t the high powered offense fans expected to see, but the Patriots are still getting used to playing at full strength. With Gronkowski and Michel healthy, and the consistent play of Julian Edelman, James White, and Josh Gordon, this offense could be one of the most dangerous, high scoring offenses that Tom Brady has ever been a part of.

This month can make or break the New England Patriots’ season. If they can’t find a consistent offensive rhythm, then there is a very low chance they will secure home field advantage for the playoffs, let alone even make a playoff run. In past years, the Patriots dominated the month of December. Since Brady took over the starting quarterback job in 2001, the Patriots have gone a staggering 54-10 in December. This is the month where the Patriots usually put all the pieces in place to set up for another historic playoff run.

And this year, it has to be the same. Both Belichick and Brady have always stressed the importance of playing well in December. In their minds, if they are not at the top of their game by week 17, then they are in serious trouble. The Patriots know how to win, and they know how to win when it counts the most. They are already in great shape to make the playoffs, but what matters most to them is what lies ahead.

They’re not looking to the playoffs or to securing that No. 1 seed at the moment. They’re focused on the Minnesota Vikings for now, and then to whoever is up next. New England’s goal is to finish each week undefeated, and if they accomplish that starting in December, there could very well be another banner hanging in Foxboro.
